Mr Coppinger has a Master of Surgery degree from the University of London, awarded on the basis of three years research into the complications of prostate surgery and the submission of a thesis. This is the surgical equivalent of a MD* in the United Kingdom.
He has continued his research interests for many years, publishing papers on diverse subjects, ranging from prostatectomy through to stone disease.
He has run a locally based research program for many years. As well as producing papers on a variety of subjects, he is proud of the fact that he has had a 100% success rate in identifying young doctors who wish in train in urology, equipping them with skills in research and seeing them all obtain specialist registrar training posts in urology.
He has organised and run drug trials in house as well as acting as an advisor to pharmaceutical organisations.
*British Universities replaced the MD as the initial medical qualification in the middle of the nineteenth century, awarding instead paired degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB BS)
